Program Overview

MIT-WPU accords topmost priority to research right from the undergraduate program till advanced level of education. The university has a strong belief on contribution of academics to societal development by way of research, innovation, logical and rational thinking and never ending quest for acquiring knowledge. MIT-WPU with legacy of more than 4 decades offers the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics under School of Economics in strict adherence to guidelines prescribed by UGC, New Delhi. The rules for admission to the PhD program and the duration of Ph.D. program are as per the guidelines of University Grants Commission and academic ordinances/regulations of MIT-WPU. Students should have cleared a Master’s degree in the appropriate stream from a recognized institute of repute.

At School of Economics, the faculties are actively engaged and dedicated to contribute their research findings in double and triple blind peer reviewed international and national journals. The faculty here, provides enough impetus and stimulate students to author research paper and research oriented activates like conference proceedings, symposiums, workshops and consortiums. We are having research collaborations with various research organizations and industries.

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy is granted for research work in areas recognized by the academic School. The research work shall be an original work characterized either by the discovery of facts, or by a fresh approach towards the interpretation and application of facts, or development of society as whole.
The School of Economics offers Under-graduate (B.Sc. Hons. Economics) and Post-graduate programs (M.Sc. Economics) in Economics. It is driven by research, consultancy, industry orientation, innovative and interdisciplinary studies focused on holistic development of a new generation of leaders in policy making and analysts and future leaders in corporate world. The School is actively engage in conducting various seminars, competitions, business quiz, workshops, industry visits, field visits, training and placements programs, cultural activities etc. to inculcate the true spirit of partnership, innovation, value of spirituality, humanity and global peace among the tomorrow’s responsible citizen of our country. The Economics education at MIT-WPU empowers the student to comprehend and judge the various global trends in trade and business.

MIT came to existence as a first private engineering college in Maharashtra in the year 1983 and granted the status of private university in 2017. It worked with one motto of integrating spirituality, peace science mankind for the welfare of the society and the nation as a whole. The course curricula has been device in consultation with academicians from top notch universities (both national and international), subject experts, corporate professionals to to include courses for an all-encompassing knowledge of the domain along with Peace courses that are the foundation of the University. For an academic researcher, the university possess state of art infrastructure like dedicated computer lab with statistical software like R Studio, EViews, SPSS, STATA and 247 e-library with free access to numerous e-books, e-pubs, paid journals like J-store, Economic and Political Weekly, The Economist, database (national and international) and access to value addition certification program (during the PhD coursework) and above all faulty member with research bent of mind from top notch universities and institute of India such as IIMs, DSE, etc. The school strives a perfect blend of academia with research oriented activities and events for the benefit of the society and nation as a whole.

The School of Economics, MIT-World Peace University provides an excellent opportunity to academically inclined and enthusiastic individuals to undertake research in various fields of Economics. The PhD program in Economics is aimed at building strong research foundation for students interested in doing original research and pursuing advanced studies in the area of economics. Be it conventional economic research or inter-disciplinary research, our faculty members are always eager to support and guide the students in the right direction and help them accomplish their research endeavors. The School is involved in active research in the areas of applied microeconomics, macro and monetary economics, financial economics, applied econometrics, labor economics, health economics, environmental and energy economics, public policy issues, experimental economics, law and economics, business economics, socio-economic issues through major and minor research projects.
MIT-WPU provides a dynamic environment to prepare students for a bright career in academics, research and corporates. We engage our students in research seminars, workshops, conferences, courses and research activities.

Following areas of research are available in Economics: Development studies, Labour economics, Environmental economics, Public Policy, Health economics, Industrial economics, Strategic and economic planning, Economics of corporate restructuring, Advanced macro-economics, International relations, Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, Country Risk Analysis, Forecasting techniques, Public Policy Analysis, Strategic Planning, Consumer buying behavior.

The above list is indicative in nature, however various interdisciplinary research areas can also be pursued in School of Economics.
MIT-WPU has a Central library at the campus which is well equipped with books on Economics, journals, e-journal, online journal database and various research related software. Besides, the School is equipped with computer lab which can be used to conduct various workshops related to research methodology and application of statistical software to research scholars and faculty development programs under the MIT-WPU School of Economics. The computer lab is well equipped with advanced statistical software like “EViews”, “SPSS” and “R Studio” to further facilitate PhD scholars for research. Access to numerous books, journals and database using e-library from anywhere and at any time. We have access to many paid and unpaid journals and database besides e-books and e-pubs like J-store, EPW, The Economics, Yojana

The center aims at promoting interdisciplinary as well as joint research among its faculty members for funding from outside agencies. The broader knowledge and expertise of members of the Center will strengthen funding prospects. Efforts are being made in materializing numerous collaborations and tie-ups with corporates and think tanks bodies to attract sponsored & quality researches.

MIT-World Peace University has taken many initiative to expand its reach globally through internationalization of its programs and opening new avenues of association for global student community as well. Currently, the School of Economics are in the process of collaboration with the University of Putra, Malaysia for a program on international immersion summer school. Many other such collaborations to strengthen the academia and research at the School of Economics are in the pipeline.

Embarking on the journey of doing PhD can be quite intriguing as well as challenging. Nerveless it enables one to gather extremely valuable experience in career as well as life. PhD is an essential pre-requisite if you are inclined to have a future career in academia. A PhD degree prepares you extensively for corporate job positions like senior analyst or an actuary. You can also have a good career in publishing houses as editor of books and journals related to economics. No matter which of these career options you choose, having a PhD demonstrates your ability of self-motivation and self-discipline besides your in-depth experience in handling research projects, problem solving and data analytical abilities. The faculty members of School of Economics are actively engaged in MDPs and FDPs of many corporates and help them in taking vital managerial decisions post evaluating the business and commercial consequences. This long standing relationship with the corporate world provides the school with an edge to place students as interns in these corporates which more often this leads to pre-placement offers. Besides this, the school is having interlinkages with many think-tanks and ministerial bodies. Eligibility

Eligibility and selection process is as per UGC notification 5th May 2016 (Minimum standards and procedure for the award of M. Phil/Ph.D. degree regulations 2016) and 1st amendment by UGC on 27th Aug 2018 and 2nd amendment on 16th Oct 2018.Subject to the conditions stipulated in these regulations, the following persons are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. program :

  • Master’s Degree holders satisfying the criteria stipulated below

    Candidates for admission to the PhD program shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

    A relaxation of 5% of marks from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

  • Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC(non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time

  • A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. program of the same Institution

  • Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. program.

Selection Process 

  • MIT-WPU is looking for bright and dedicated scholars interested in research to join us as Ph.D. scholars for Academic Year 2020-21. Prospective students satisfying the eligibility criterion are encouraged to apply for Ph.D. Programme on www.mitwpu.edu.in

  • Candidates satisfying eligibility criteria will be informed to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test conducted by MIT-WPU as per the UGC guidelines. University may decide separate terms and conditions for Ph.D. entrance test for those students who qualify UGC-NET ( Including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET ( including JRF)/SLET/GATE/Teacher fellowship holder or have passed M. Phil programme.

  • The Ph.D. entrance test shall be qualifying with qualifying marks as 50% provided that relaxation from 50% to 45% shall be allowed for the candidates belongs to SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer)/Differently abled category in the entrance examination conducted by the university
    The syllabus of entrance test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.

  • The interview/viva-voce will be conducted by the university for test qualifying candidates. For the selection of candidates, a weightage of 70% to the entrance test and 30 % to the performance in the interview/Viva-voce shall be given
